Part of a Team

The ICU provides a unique opportunity to gain experience in the management of critically ill adult and paediatric patients in a supervised supportive environment. Our trainees are involved in the managemnet of complex cardiothoracic patients with learning opportunities in trans thoracic and transoesophageal echocardiography.

Our ICU is a Tier 2 site for adult ECMO in Victoria allowing trainees to develop and gain experience in the decision making around ECMO initiation, management and weaning of this complex critical care support. Participation in the hospital Rapid Response System through the Medical Emergency Team and Code Blue Team provide exposure to acutely unwell patients and opportunities to develop and practice management in this area and also to develop and consolidate team leading and participation skills.

Our ICU is focused on providing high quality patient care and excellent clinical training in a supportive, friendly collaborative multidisciplinary environment. Our medical staff are supportive by highly skilled nursing and allied health staff who assist us in providing best care to our patients. We have a well-developed formal education program which is augmented by regular morbidity and mortality meetings, ECMO and MET audits. There is a very established research team with participation in national and multinational trials and we have assisted many CICM trainees with completion of their formal projects. We have regular Safety and Quality meetings with focus on providing and monitoring delivery of high quality safe care to our patients.

The department also delivers BASIC and Paeds BASIC courses.

The iValidate program ( Identifying Values, Listening, and Advising High Risk Patients in Acute Care) is a highly regraded locally developed communication program delivered by experts in communication, ethics and end of life care to improve communication and shared decision making for end of life care.  This course if offered to all our ICU trainees
