About the role 

The Aboriginal Health Liaison Officer (AHLO) works towards achieving key objectives set out within the Aboriginal Cultural Safety Plan.

The role will: 

  • Provide culturally safe and respectful support to Aboriginal patients and their families
  • Liaise with key stakeholders involved in Aboriginal service delivery including Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisations (ACCO’s)
  • Facilitate and engage with patient discharge planning and referrals
  • Record and report daily activities in to database for reporting to the Department
  • Contribute and participate in the broad scope of the Aboriginal Health Team functions

Barwon Health is one of the largest and most comprehensive regional health services in Australia, providing care at all stages of life and circumstance.  The Aboriginal Health Team located within University Hospital support and advocate for Aboriginal and Torres Strait islander inpatients and their family.

The People & Culture Directorate is a large team that supports and delivers a range of services to the organisation including Human Resources, Employee Relations, Recruitment, Talent Acquisition, Onboarding, Staff Care, Payroll and Work Health Safety (WHS).  The Aboriginal Health Unit sits within the People & Culture Directorate in dedicated space where the Aboriginal Health Team is located.

Essential: Experience in working in a support and advocacy role with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, communities and organisations.
Essential: Comprehensive computer skills
Essential: Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing
Desirable: Strong connections to Aboriginal communities in Victoria and possibly beyond
Desirable: Current drivers licence
