About the service

An initiative coming out of the Royal Commission, Barwon Health’s Mental Health Hospital in the Home (MH HITH), is one of a limited number of HITH programs being established and evaluated across the state of Victoria. The aim is to provide timely and effective, intensive treatment and support for individuals aged 16 years and older with high acuity mental health and / or AOD needs, in their home environment. The service provides 9 adult and youth acute mental health bed-equivalent packages of care and operates 24 hrs a day, 7 days a week.

About you

  • Lived experience of caring for someone with mental distress/illness and/or drug and alcohol use
  • Lived experience of public mental health services
  • Previous experience as a carer peer support worker or senior carer peer support worker
  • Experience supporting others through intentional sharing of lived experience
  • Sound knowledge of peer support principles

About the role

Guided by the Lived Experience Manager and the Operational Manager of MH HITH, you will provide expert input into the continued development of the peer support component of the service and, more broadly, the development of the carer peer support program across the service. Other duties of your role include;

  • Providing one-on-one peer support
  • Facilitate peer support groups for carers
  • Provide carer perspective supervision to MHDAS carer peer support workers
  • Participate in MHDAS educational activities designed to promote greater understanding of lived experience work, in particular peer support work, at the service

The Senior Carer Peer Worker will draw upon their lived experience of supporting and caring for a person with mental distress/illness who has or is accessing mental health and/or alcohol and other drug services to inform their practice.
