About Clinical Education and Training

The Clinical Education and Training Unit leads an integrated approach to clinical education and training, helping Barwon Health to achieve its education goals by delivering, supporting and promoting coordinated, quality education and training across health care roles in Barwon Health and the Barwon South Western region. We comprise of an interprofessional team of clinical educators and support staff across allied health, nursing, midwifery, and medical disciplines, working together to develop clinicians who model excellent practice, challenge poor practice, and inspire others.

About the Nursery

The Special Care Nursery at Barwon Health is a Level 5 Neonatal Unit. It has capacity for up to 20 cots, and is staffed for 13 babies with the ability to increase as required. The nursery has recently undergone extensive upgrading and redeveloped. The facilities are fresh and vibrant and include 2 resuscitation rooms, respiratory support capability for up to 4 babies, a separate parent lounge and 2 overnight rooms. Neonatal care is provided to neonates 31 weeks onwards, with staffing 1:3 according to ratios.

About the role

An exciting and challenging opportunity has arisen with Barwon Health in Geelong. We are looking to recruit an enthusiastic and passionate Clinical Nurse Educator for Special Care Nursery on a fixed term basis until December 2021.

As the Clinical Nurse Educator – Special Care Nursery you will:

  • Develop and evaluate education programs, learning materials, resources and education opportunities for all learning needs and stages of clinical staff in Special Care Nursery.
  • Collaborate with new and existing clinical staff to address specific areas of learning needs and opportunities, formulate individual learning plans, and encouraging the attendance of further skill development.
  • Actively participate in clinical assessment of staff, certification of competencies, professional development, review of clinical guidelines, quality improvement & organisational accreditations.
  • Implement a unique orientation program, specific to Special Care Nursery, and facilitate in collaboration with fellow Women’s & Children’s educators, University educators, Clinical Nurse Specialists, Associate Nurse Unit Mangers & Nurse Unit Managers.
  • Foster the philosophy of evolving learning needs and development, via formal and informal education sessions and resource materials.
  • Co-ordinate the clinical and theoretical component of the postgraduate nursing program affiliated with the collaborating university.
  • Actively pursue opportunities and programs to advance own professional skills and knowledge, to promote standards of nursing care and clinical practice, in accordance to current, best and evidence based practice.
