Become part of the team at Barwon Health’s Cardiothoracic Surgery Unit
The Cardiothoracic Surgery Unit at University Hospital Geelong is a tertiary cardiothoracic surgery unit performing all adult cardiac surgical and thoracic surgical procedures, except for transplantation and adult congenital cardiac surgery.
Over 400 adult cardiac cases are performed each year. Minimally invasive valve procedures, Aortic Surgery are also undertaken as part of the portfolio. More recently, Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR) programme has been initiated and a heart team comprising of cardiologists and surgeons participate in the process.
Thoracic Surgery for thoracic oncology patients is in the process being expanded. A full complement of thoracoscopic procedures and extended thoracic resections are performed and the junior staff would be able to gain exceptional experience in the management of lung cancer patients. A thriving multi-disciplinary setup is available to gain further experience. Rigid bronchoscopy and EBUS diagnostic procedures are also available and would be taught.
University Hospital Geelong has an outstanding ICU and the close working relationship with the team is a highlight of the environment.

Selection Criteria

Essential:
Eligible for General Registration with AHPRA
Essential: Some critical care exposure (ICU / Anaesthesia / Cardiology (CCU)) as an HMO or Registrar Essential: Demonstrated interest in pursuing SET surgical training, ideally in cardiothoracic surgery, and steps taken to meet eligibility criteria of the RACS Specialty Boards Essential: Elite performance and attention to detail in all facets of patient management - (inpatient pre-operative and post-operative care Essential: Ability to assess and manage physiologically unstable patients, order appropriate investigations, direct junior staff and nursing staff in high acuity patient care situations and formulate management plan, liaise with other craft groups (especially ICU / Cardiology) and ensure adequate provision of Essential: Ability to work in a team with mutual respect and have very good communication skills and understanding of the importance of handover and continuity of care Essential: Ability to conduct research projects / publications etc to meet RACS SET selection requirements Essential: Demonstrated interest in pursuing SET surgical training, ideally in cardiothoracic surgery, and steps taken to meet eligibility criteria of the RACS Specialty Boards
