About the facility 

Barwon Mental Health, Drugs and Alcohol Services (MHDAS) provides integrated and recovery oriented mental health and drugs and alcohol assessment, treatment and community and family support to people of all ages within the Barwon Region experiencing, or at risk of experiencing, mental health and/or drug and alcohol issues. Our service is internationally recognised for its innovative clinical programs and integrated models of practice that are consumer centred, accessible and family inclusive.

About the role 

Barwon Health is excited to offer an opportunity in peer support working within the Drugs and Alcohol Services (DAS) Team. The Peer Overdose Prevention Worker will draw on local knowledge and personal experience of substance use to identify people at risk of overdosing, and those who have survived overdose, and provide 1:1 peer education and support to people who might not utilise mainstream supports. The Worker will also develop professional relationships with key stakeholders to increase the capacity of peer, family and professional groups to reduce overdose risks and respond to overdoses. As a member of the DAS multidisciplinary team, and utilising a lived experience of substance use, you will provide overdose prevention activities:

(i)                  Directly to people at high risk of, or who have survived overdose, and

(ii)                Via capacity building initiatives with the target consumer group and other relevant stakeholders

Selection Criteria Essential: Certificate IV in Alcohol and Other Drugs, or commitment to completing this qualification
Essential: Current Victorian Driver's Licence
Essential: Lived experience of overcoming the impact of substance use issues
Essential: Sound knowledge about overdose risks and responses, and harm reducton strategies
Essential: Knowledge of peer support principals and willingness to support others through respectful sharing of a lived experience
Essential: Ability to build and maintain professional relationships with internal and external stakeholders
Essential: Computer skills in Microsoft Office applications
