Living and working in Geelong provides many wonderful lifestyle opportunities with the beautiful Surf coast beaches and the city of Melbourne right on our doorstep.

In our Cardiac operating theatres we strive to always work collaboratively, with a key focus on team culture. We are proud to foster exceptional relationships between Nursing staff, Surgeons, specialised Cardiac Anaesthetists, and our Perfusion team. Our aim is to continually promote a supportive environment, to develop and diversify the skills of any new team member. We pride ourselves on our high level of knowledge and skills relating to cardiac procedures and the vital role of the scrub Nurse within our speciality. The cardiac environment can at times be intense, however it is through this collaborative and supportive team environment that we excel in delivering best patient care and outcomes.

Barwon Health’s Cardiac Operating unit services a large catchment area from Outer western Melbourne to the South Australian border of South Western Victoria. We perform XX cardiac procedures per anum across elective and emergency, encompassing a wide variety of stimulating, lifesaving surgical procedures. Due to the nature of complex cardiac surgery on offer at Barwon Health, we function as a tier two ECMO program. We perform interesting aortic work, combined procedures with the vascular team, as well as advanced minimally invasive surgery and cutting edge Robotic procedures.

Cardiac Scrub Nurses are required to be on call during some evenings, weekends and nights for emergency surgery, which can occur 24 hours a day and seven days a week. While working under the supervision of the surgical team, our Nurses also play an important role in readying the operating room and instrumentation for cardiac procedures. They must be organized and prepared, and utilize critical thinking skills to manage any possible complications. Being detail oriented with excellent communication skills and the ability to anticipate the needs of the surgeon and convey them to the surgical team helps to ensure safe, quality care.
