About the facility

University Hospital Geelong is part of Barwon Health, Victoria's largest regional health care provider, servicing the community in the Geelong and South Western Victoria region.

Our team at University Hospital Geelong consists of 20 Dietitians and 5 Dietitian Assistants. We provide dietetic services to inpatients and outpatients across all clinical specialties according to current best practice and professional standards. Our staff are expected to pursue clinical excellence, consumer-centred care and interdisciplinary teamwork. Additionally, the Nutrition and Dietetics Department provides clinical placements for dietetics students, co-ordinated by our Student Placement Co-ordinator and has a strong relationship with Food Services via our Food Service Dietitian.

About the role 

As the successful candidate you will act as a high-functioning member of the Nutrition and Dietetics Department, providing clinical leadership, education and specialised knowledge, and delivering evidence based nutrition and dietetic services to patients and clients of Barwon Health. The role will support consumers and carers to achieve an optimum level of health independence via:

  • Provide leadership, co-ordination and consultancy regarding the dietetics student program across all Barwon Health Nutrition and Dietetics sites and placement domains (clinical, food services, community health).
  • Facilitate appropriate inter-professional supervision, support and development of students.
  • Arrange dietetic supervisors for students for all placement domains, and arrange timetables for all student activities on placement.
  • Utilise Placeright placement management system for arranging dietetics placements between Deakin University and Barwon Health.
  • Provide support to supervisors on working with students and build capacity of supervisory skills with the aim of growing placement opportunities at Barwon Health.
  • Attend a minimum of two Clinical Educator meetings per year at Deakin University
  • Assist in the assessment of dietetics students undertaking their Objective Structure Clinical Examination (OSCE) each year.

All activities of the position will reflect current best-practice and professional standards for Nutrition & Dietetics. The position will operate according to relevant legislation, Barwon Health policies, program and departmental guidelines. The role will also require flexibility in availability to support service delivery initiatives.

Essential: Accredited Practising Dietitian (APD) status
Essential: Minimum of 7 years post graduate clinical experience.
Essential: Previous training and experience in supervision and training of dietetics students
Essential: Previous experience in supervising both Dietetic students and Grade 1 & 2
Essential: Competent in Microsoft/IT applications and clinical databases
Essential: Proven experience in the clinical care setting, including provision of nutrition support
Essential: Must be able to work during the year when students are on placement. Annual leave will be expected to be taken during periods where Deakin University students are not on placement at Barwon Health and is subject to approval by the Manager/Deputy Manager, Nutrition and Dietetics
Essential: Ability to manage a demanding work load and prioritise accordingly
Essential: Ability to work effectively as a member of a multidisciplinary team and contribute to a positive team environment
Essential: Ability to differentiate, accept and exercise appropriate mechanisms of internal and external communication and accountability
Desirable: Post-grad qualifications in student training
Desirable: Previous experience with group education of patients/clients
Desirable: Prior research or special project experience
