Barwon health is the major regional health provider for the Barwon South West region. It is Victoria’s largest regional health service with one of the busiest hospitals in the state, University Hospital. We serve over 500,000 people through the efforts of over 6,500 staff and more than 1000 volunteers. 

The Department of Anaesthesia , Perioperative and Pain Medicine supports a wide range of clinical services including cardiac, obstetric and paediatric services, a benchmark Perioperative Service and a Pain Medicine Unit that is recognized for training by the Faculty of Pain Medicine of the College of Anaesthetists. The Department has a strong commitment to excellence in clinical, education, quality and research activities.

About the role

We are looking for an enthusiastic Director to lead the department comprising of 30 specialist Anaesthetists and 20 ANZCA accredited Registrar trainees and Fellows.

Applications are invited from Consultant Anaesthetists holding a FANZCA or equivalent and registrable in Victoria for the position of Director of Anaesthesia, Perioperative and Pain Medicine at Barwon Health, University Hospital Geelong.

Research experience is highly desirable and as part of the Director’s role, an academic appointment with the School of Medicine at Deakin University could be made available to an interested candidate, and assistance with continuing or developing an academic research profile within anaesthesia would be encouraged and supported.

About you

The Director will provide medical leadership and operational and financial management of the Department ensuring the provision of efficient and effective high quality services in accordance with the Barwon Health Strategic Direction and Business Plan.

It is expected that the Director will:

  • Be patient-focused in the provision of clinical care. 
  • Facilitate and promote a co-operative, multi-disciplinary team approach to all aspects of the service
  • Maximise the efficient use of Barwon Health resources, so as to provide optimum care to all patients
  • Value, manage and contribute to the teaching/training at undergraduate and postgraduate levels 
  • Actively support research activities within the department 
  • Lead the Department in audit and other departmental maintenance of standards processes
  • Exhibit behaviours that demonstrate respect for colleagues and facilitate good communication within the department and with other departments.
  • Represent the department within Barwon Health and the wider anaesthetic and medical communities.

Selection Criteria Essential: •Basic medical degree, registrable with the Australian Health Practitioner regulation Agency (AHPRA)
Essential: •Suitable post-graduate qualifications in Anaesthesia, recognised by the National Specialist Qualifications Advisory Committee and registrable in the State of Victoria (preferably FANZCA).
Essential: •Experience in medical Leadership and management
Desirable: •Academic Credentials
